For His hearers, the effect of Jesus' teaching was, as Leonard Sweet writes it, that of a 'soul Tsunami.' Traditional thinking about life and God and power and love and neighbors was catapulted into chaos, like wheat being winnowed, tossed up into the air to separate out the useless bits and blow them away. The kerfuffle continues, two thousand years later, to create a disturbance in the useless bits in our thinking.
